If you’ve ever hiked through the Bear Lake area of Rocky Mountain National Park, you know it’s one of those places that feels like stepping into a painting. Towering peaks, alpine lakes, golden aspens in the fall—it’s Colorado magic at its finest.

Whether you’re planning a romantic engagement session, a couples adventure shoot, or just looking to soak in some mountain beauty, the Bear Lake corridor is full of spots that take your breath away (and yes, maybe a bit from the altitude too).

Here are some of my favorite scenic locations that are absolute gems for photos and exploration.

1. Bear Lake

Let’s start with the classic. Bear Lake is the heart of this area—and for good reason. With Hallett Peak reflecting perfectly in the water, it’s stunning year-round. Early mornings bring still, mirror-like reflections, while golden hour light wraps the pines and peaks in warm hues.

Pro tip: Visit at sunrise to avoid crowds and catch that calm, glassy surface.

2. Dream Lake

A short hike (about a mile) from Bear Lake, Dream Lake lives up to its name. The trail winds through dense forest and opens up to a spectacular alpine lake framed by Hallett and Flattop Mountains. It’s a dream for both hikers and photographers, especially at dawn when the light kisses the ridgeline.

Vibe: Peaceful, majestic, and totally worth the early wake-up.

3. Emerald Lake

If you keep going past Dream Lake, you’ll end up at Emerald Lake—the crown jewel of the hike. Jagged cliffs rise straight from the turquoise water, and the view back down the valley is unbeatable. It’s dramatic, cinematic, and perfect for couples who want a truly epic mountain backdrop.

Pro tip: Bring layers! The weather changes quickly, and it’s often cooler here than at the trailhead.

4. Nymph Lake

Don’t skip Nymph Lake on your way up the trail—it’s small but enchanting. In summer, it’s dotted with lily pads, and in autumn, it catches the perfect mix of golden reflections from the surrounding aspens. It’s quiet, romantic, and often overlooked.

Vibe: Whimsical, intimate, and full of hidden charm.

5. Glacier Gorge Trailhead

If you’re up for a bit more adventure, the Glacier Gorge Trailhead (just before Bear Lake) offers access to several incredible spots—Alberta Falls, The Loch, and Mills Lake. Each one brings something unique: thundering waterfalls, glassy lakes, and sweeping mountain vistas.

Pro tip: These trails make for amazing full-day adventure sessions, especially if you love variety in your backdrops.

6. Lake Haiyaha

Tucked a little farther along the trail system, this spot feels like you’ve stumbled into another world. Giant boulders, teal-green water, and dramatic peaks make it a photographer’s dream. After a rockslide in 2022, the lake’s color transformed into a surreal, milky turquoise that’s unlike anything else in the park.

It’s a bit of a hike, but the reward is well worth it for couples who love an adventurous, off-the-beaten-path vibe.

Vibe: Bold, moody, and otherworldly.

Why I Love Shooting in the Bear Lake Area

Every time I photograph here, it feels like the mountains are telling a new story. The light shifts by the minute, the air feels crisp and alive, and there’s this incredible sense of peace that makes every photo feel timeless.

Whether you’re hiking in boots, dressed in your wedding best, or simply exploring hand in hand, the Bear Lake area delivers the kind of natural beauty that stays with you long after you’ve left.
