Wedding Portraits at the CSU Trial Gardens

There’s something undeniably magical about photographing a couple at the Colorado State University Trial Gardens. Nestled in the heart of Fort Collins, the CSU Trial Gardens are bursting with life—literally. For plant lovers (and lovers in general), it’s a dreamy, floral wonderland that brings color, texture, and story to every frame.

So when Mike and Robyn—a pair of dedicated plant parents—chose this lush, blooming backdrop for a quick get away for their wedding portraits, I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect fit.

A Perfect Match: Science, Plants, and Love

Robyn isn’t just your average plant enthusiast—she’s a professor of plant pathology, so the connection to the Trial Gardens goes deeper than petals and pretty colors. These gardens are a living laboratory, a celebration of biodiversity and botany, and in many ways, a reflection of Robyn’s passion and expertise. Pair that with Mike’s easygoing warmth, and you’ve got two people whose love feels right at home among the blossoms.

Their chemistry, the colors of the gardens, and the golden Colorado light? Let’s just say, it was plant portrait perfection. 🌿✨

Best Time to Visit the CSU Trial Gardens

If you're planning your own Colorado wedding portraits (or engagement session), timing is everything—especially in a place as seasonal and light-sensitive as the gardens.

🌸 Best Time of Year: Late spring through early autumn is ideal. That’s when the gardens are in full bloom, showing off their boldest colors and most impressive textures.

🌅 Best Time of Day: Sunrise and sunset. The gardens glow during golden hour, casting warm, soft light that flatters skin tones and makes the flowers absolutely shine.

For Mike and Robyn’s session, we arrived about an hour before sunset and stayed until the last rays of sunlight dipped behind the Rocky Mountains. That soft light, paired with the joyful energy of newlyweds and an abundance of blooms, made for some of my favorite portraits to date.
