Setting the Scene

Bill and Courtney are two big nerds in love—which means they’re absolutely my kind of people. When they reached out for engagement photos in Boulder, I knew right away we had to skip the usual Chautauqua crowd and head to one of my favorite hidden gems: NCAR. Not only does it have some of the best views of the Flatirons (seriously, better than Chautauqua!), but it also gave these two the perfect backdrop to show off their personalities. Bill brought his champagne sabering talents—yes, he actually sliced the bottle open—and while the wine was warm and dry, it made for some epic photos. They practiced dips, popped bubbly, and laughed the whole way up the trail. We ended on the hilltop, soaking in a golden sunset that was almost as bold as Bill’s bright orange Corvette. Pro tip: the easiest way to get your fiancé excited about engagement photos? Promise them they can bring the car.

Scouting the Best Spots: NCAR’s Two-for-One Magic

I actually found NCAR during one of my many biking adventures—it’s one of the prettiest hill climbs to suffer up, and every time I reach the top (gasping for air), I’m rewarded with this incredible view of the Flatirons that always takes my breath away for a second reason. That’s when I realized it would be a stunning spot for engagement portraits.

There are two fantastic locations here: one at the base of the trails, where the trees and tall grasses give us a cozy, natural feel, and another just up the road with wide-open views perfect for showing off the mountains—and maybe your car. The upper spot is especially great for couples who want to bring something extra (yes, I’m still thinking about Bill’s bright orange Corvette). It’s an underrated gem for Boulder engagement portraits and a personal favorite of mine.

The Best Time of Day for NCAR Portraits

Since NCAR sits right at the base of the Rockies, timing your session is everything. I always aim to start a little before golden hour—when the light is soft, glowy, and flattering—because once the sun dips behind the ridgeline, it disappears fast. Shooting in this window gives us those dreamy, golden tones that make engagement portraits shine. Whether you’re popping champagne, spinning in circles, or posing with your partner and your prized car, that pre-sunset glow makes the magic happen.
