Golden hour in Boulder, Colorado isn’t just a time of day -
it’s a full-blown personality. It’s warm, romantic, a little dramatic, and always late to dinner because it insists on getting “just one more shot.”
Recently, I had the joy of photographing Alex "Fuego Papi" , Jessica, their adorable baby girl, and their sweet pup out in Boulder County Open Space. Between the love, the laughter, and one very energetic dog, this session was pure sunshine — literally.
But golden hour isn’t just about standing in the glow and hoping for the best. Nope, it’s about learning to dance with the light — playing with direction, intensity, and mood to tell a deeper story. So today, I’m breaking down how I capture a full range of lighting looks in one session: from bold beams to moody shadows.
Because when you get it right? You don’t just take pretty pictures. You make magic.

Direct Light: That Main Character Moment
We started with direct light — bold, beautiful, and not afraid to make an entrance. The sun was hitting just right, giving us that movie-poster-level glow across Lost Gulch Overlook.
Alex and Jessica looked radiant as the light poured over them, their baby giggling in the sunshine. Honestly, it was giving main character energy. This type of lighting is great for showing joy — it’s bright, it’s punchy, it’s basically the extrovert of lighting styles.
Soft Light: Gentle, Dreamy, and Full of Heart
As the sun dipped lower (and we all started doing that little dance between warm and “wait, is it getting chilly?”), the light softened. This is when I switch gears into soft lighting — that creamy, flattering glow that wraps everything in warmth.
Jessica snuggled their baby close while Fuego Papi laughed in the background, and it honestly looked like a scene straight out of a cozy indie film. This is the light for quiet moments — for when love doesn’t need to shout to be heard.
Backlighting: Cue the Halo Effect
Then came my favorite trick in the playbook — backlighting. The sun slipped right behind them, wrapping their family in that golden halo that makes everyone look like they’re one heartfelt speech away from the end of a rom-com.
Even their dog joined in the glow, tail wagging like she knew she was the star of this act. (Spoiler: she was.)
Backlighting adds that cinematic, storybook look — the “we made it through the montage and found our happy ending” kind of vibe.
The Art of Mixing Light: Storytelling in Shades of Gold
Here’s the secret: great storytelling in photography comes from variety.
By mixing direct, soft, back, and shadow lighting, you capture a whole range of emotions — the laughter, the warmth, the tenderness, and yes, even the chaos of trying to get everyone (dog included) to look the same direction.
This session was a story about love:
💛 The love between two beautiful souls.
💛 The love between doting parents and their happy, wriggly little girl.
💛 And the love between a girl and her dog (because yes, those two had a whole subplot of their own).
Every flicker of light added another layer — from glowing smiles to quiet, heartfelt snuggles.
